The programme

About the programme

The Certified Nursing Assistant programme is the bedside course: the daily care of a patient in a ward or a care home, and the observations that go with it.

What the programme covers

Vital signs and their normal ranges, personal care and patient comfort, safe moving and handling, pressure-area care, nutrition and hydration, infection control, and the documentation a shift is handed over in. Communication is taught alongside the tasks, because a patient who understands what is happening is a patient who cooperates with it.

How it is taught

Sixteen two-hour sessions, half in the classroom and half in the skills lab on hospital beds and hoists. Practical assessments are done in pairs, with one student giving care and the other observing and reporting, which is the shape of the work itself.

Where it leads

Nursing assistant and healthcare assistant roles in hospitals, clinics and long-term care, and the foundation for a nursing qualification later on.
